Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete system of healing that developed
in China about 3,000 years ago and has changed very little over
the centuries. It's based on the idea that laws of nature can be
used to understand the inner workings of the body. Your health,
like the universe at large, proponents say, is subject to constant
battling between opposing forces such as heat and cold, male and
female, joy and sadness, which manifest themselves in your body
as too much or too little activity in particular organs. An imbalance
between any of these forces can cause a blockage in the flow of
your Qi or vital energy traveling through your body along invisible
pathways known as meridians. TCM practitioners typically use acupuncture
and herbs to help unblock your qi and bring your body back into
harmony and wellness.
Traditional medical practices include herbal medicine,
acupuncture, massage, and so on. TCM says processes of the human
body are interrelated and constantly interact with the environment.
Therefore the theory looks for the signs of disharmony in the external
and internal environment of a person in order to understand, treat
and prevent illness and disease.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical
system that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses.TCM
theory is based on a number of philosophical frameworks including
the Theory of Yin-Yang, the Five Elements, the human body Meridian
system (or called Qi), and others. Diagnosis and treatment are conducted
with reference to these concepts.
The Chinese also developed a very sophisticated
idea of physiology, and specific functions were defined for each
of the 12 main organs. The Nei Ching Su Wen states that
"the heart fills the pulse with blood…. And the force of the
pulse flows into the arteries, and the force of the arteries ascends
into the lungs". This describes the double circulation of blood
some 2,000 years.
The anatomy (acupuncture points and channels) and
physiology of traditional Chinese medicine, along with a detailed
examination of the pulse and tongue, provides the basis for TCM.
Practitioners believe that there is a life force
or energy in every body. In order for Yin and Yang to be balanced
and for the body to be healthy, Qi must be balanced and flowing
freely. When there's too little or too much Qi in one of the body's
energy pathways (meridians), or when the flow of Qi is blocked,
illness results.
